Stroudwater Associates Welcomes New Consultant & Continues to Grow Performance Improvement Capabilities

July 31, 2018 – Portland, Maine – Stroudwater Associates, a leading national healthcare consulting firm, welcomed a new consultant and entered into an exclusive senior advisor agreement with an operational performance expert to support Stroudwater’s clients to create fluid and flexible workforces.

Daniel Given, CPA, joins Stroudwater as a Consultant. Given came to healthcare through his father, a family physician, and has seen firsthand the issues rural providers face in an increasingly regulated, technical, and complicated industry. He brings to the firm operational and financial knowledge of non-profit Critical Access Hospitals, rural health clinics, nursing homes, federally qualified health centers, and emergency medical services.

Before joining Stroudwater, Given served as chief financial officer for a rural healthcare system. In that role, he worked with the county commission to divest the hospital’s non-reimbursable EMS service and return service to county control under a low-cost efficient model; implemented departmental budgeting and variance reports for the first time to improve financial IQ; improved the nursing home’s documentation, leading to an increase in Medicaid reimbursement; oversaw implementation of a new general ledger system, inventory system, payroll system, and corporate performance software; and identified opportunities for cost reduction and service expansion. He has also worked as a financial auditor at a regional accounting firm, performing assurance and audits for healthcare clients. Given brings to each client engagement his expertise in financial statement preparation, budgeting, and forecasting, strategic financial and operational assessments, cost report assessments, and electronic health record consulting.

Given earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting, finance, and risk management and insurance from Marshall University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Ron Hughes joined Stroudwater as a Senior Advisor in an exclusive agreement to offer performance improvement consulting services in the context of Short Interval Time Management (SITM). SITM, an approach based on managing performance in shorter intervals of time than is typical in healthcare organizations, helps organizations facing swings in workload demand to create a flexible/fluid workforce.

Hughes has invested more than two decades working with C-level hospital and ambulatory clinic leadership, physicians, directors, and frontline managers implementing organizational and procedural change.

Before serving as advisor to Stroudwater, Hughes was a senior consultant with the Huron Consulting Group and MedAssets’ Workforce Solutions division, where he worked to improve operational effectiveness and financial performance by implementing tools, metrics, and management systems. His clients’ objectives were achieved through education, coaching, and training of department leaders and front-line managers.

Hughes worked with Banner Health as operational performance improvement director for the three largest Arizona Banner Health Hospitals (Good Samaritan, Banner Desert and Banner Thunderbird). His responsibilities included working closely with facility and system leaders providing leadership, knowledge, and tools for reviewing processes and outcomes; identifying improvement opportunities; selecting appropriate improvement approaches; supporting operations management and improvement activities; and assessing the impact of operational changes.

Hughes has worked with clients including: MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX; Ohio State, Columbus, OH; Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Milwaukee, WI; Duke Medical Centers, Durham, NC; Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston, TX; Methodist Hospital, Houston, TX; Austin Regional Clinic, Austin, TX.
